Q: Tell us a little about yourself and what you do?
A: “My name is Jonah, I’m 29 years old and I’m the executive sous chef at Alloy dining. I’ve been cooking professionally for 14 years. Growing up I always had great food in the house and it was always something I was passionate about.”
Q: What got you into CrossFit?
A: “A couple years ago my best friend died and I decided it was time to make some change in my life and get back into shape. I played a lot of competitive sports growing up then got too involved in the restaurant industry. I decided that’s not the way I wanted my life to go. My friends were involved in CrossFit so I tried it and fell in love with it.”
Q: What’s one of your favourite workouts?
A: “I really like Grace. It’s 30 clean and jerks for time. It gets your lungs going and you get to lift a lot of weight.”
Q: What are your tips for people looking to start CrossFit?
A: “Don’t listen to the stereotypes but do listen to your body and your coaches. At RCR we have great coaches who are really involved and very knowledgeable. Anyone can get involved!”
Q: How do you balance CrossFit and the rest of your life?
A: “Make time for yourself otherwise you just become a victim of eating, sleeping, working which just isn’t healthy for anyone.”
Q: What’s a quote you try and live by?
A: “Yesterday’s home runs don’t win today’s games” – Babe Ruth
Q: Based on your personality, if you were a juice which one would you be?
A: “Stone Cold Rosso.”
Q: Favourite spot to go eat in Calgary?
A: “I really enjoy Pigeonhole. I like to eat everything. The server recommended two dishes per person I think I ate five or six. I also really love Shiki Menya for ramen!”
Q: What are your future fitness and CrossFit goals?
A: “I just had an operation on my foot four months ago so I’d like to do a triathlon and get my back squat back to where it was. I want to hit a 450 back squat.”
Q: What’s your favourite thing about working out here at RCR?
A: “The facility is amazing. It starts at the bottom, the business is run by ken — he’s amazing and he writes all my programming. Everyone is super friendly and it’s all about community. We help each other and coach one another through our workouts. It’s a really good environment to be in.”

Q: Tell us a little about yourself and your journey with CrossFit?
A: “I started CrossFit 14 years ago after seeing the creator of CrossFit, Greg Glassman, talking about a workout called Fran — which is 21-15-9 thruster of pull-ups as quickly as you can do it. I thought of myself as being fit, but I thought he seemed to know what he was talking about so I went and tried this workout. It was absolutely devastating and I realized I had a lot of work to do to really be fit. I was at the end of my career in the finance industry and looking for something new to do. I’ve always been fit through my life so the next logical thing for me was to be in the fitness area helping people that I knew to find health and wellness.”
Q: For someone who’s interesting in starting CrossFit, where do you recommend they start?
A: “There’s nothing you need to do before starting cross-fit. You don’t need to be in shape to start CrossFit because what we do here is scalable to any type of fitness —whether you’ve been sedentary all of your life, and you’re in your mid-40s and walking in the door for the first time, we can still use the same movements, just decrease the intensity. You just need to show up!
There’s no reason to be afraid of what we do. We all need to do this. This isn’t for the elite athletes of the world — whether it’s Crossfit or another high intensity workout — as human beings we need to go through these patterns. Without it we are not living our optimal life.”
Q: Do you have a favourite workout?
A: “My favourite workout is called Karen. It’s pretty straightforward. 150 wall balls to a 10-foot high target as fast as you can.”
Q: How did Reebok CrossFit Ramsey come to be?
A: “RCR has been an evolution over the course of 14 years. From my basement, to my garage, to a small facility and it’s increasingly getting larger and larger with more athletes under our tutelage. We were approached about 4 years ago by Reebok to co-brand Crossfit Ramsey along with reebok as they were looking to extend their name and expertise within the Crossfit industry. They were looking for the best Crossfit trainers and facilities. Luckily for us we happened to fit that bill and then re-branded Reebok CrossFit Ramsey.
